We all know that lawyers are (or should be) storytellers. Stories create a connection to a client and enable judges, lawyers, opposing parties, and others connected to a legal dispute to better understand the client’s circumstances and situation. Film directors are among the greatest storytellers of our time. This presentation will use techniques from cinema to explore techniques for teaching students about the role of storytelling in legal practice and advocacy. It will also address the dangers that storytelling can create if one is not careful, and foster discussion around common problems that arise when students first try to use storytelling techniques. Through small group activities, video clips, and discussion, this session will draw out and addresses critical concepts for teaching and assessing the skill of legal storytelling.
