The Dean and the Faculty: Establishing Relationships and Setting Boundaries

One of the many challenges facing deans is managing our relationship with our faculty as we step into a role that is quite different from that we played as a faculty colleague. Instead of formal presentations, the moderator will lead the panelists in discussions of a few recurring issues for dean-faculty relations: (1) establishing relationships as a new outside or inside dean; (2) setting boundaries with faculty,especially a challenge for former colleagues for an inside dean, but also an issue for outside deans; (3) managing changing expectations of faculty, in particular, demands of new faculty for star treatment.
