The Emerging Nexus Between Sports and Immigration Law
This panel will examine recent legal developments that impact the capacity of professional athletes to gain employment in countries where they lack citizenship and the capacity of teams to hire players from other countries. Perspectives from a player agent, a general counsel of a Major League Baseball team, and a professor of immigration law will illuminate challenges facing these different groups and how the challenges reflect broader trends in immigration law and policy. Specific points of discussion will include: implications of a professional athlete lying about his age; legality of player-sharing agreements between U.S. pro sports leagues and pro sports leagues in other countries; and variances in ethical responsibilities of player-agents by country of practice.
