Academic Engagement: Creative Options for Teaching Part-Time Students
Part-time students bring unique challenges and opportunities to the classroom: they are often tightly scheduled, travel longer distances to class, are sleep-deprived, and have more competing demands than our full-time students; on the other hand, they bring with them valuable real-world experience, diverse perspectives, a willingness to express views, and a strong desire for a legal education. How might law schools help part-time students overcome the challenges and take advantage of their strengths?
This program will explore a variety of creative options for engaging part-time students academically, including:
-Using electronic education to help alleviate some scheduling challenges while encouraging students to work collaboratively in different settings;
-Experimenting with mini- and condensed courses, weekend courses and programs, and short international programs to expand the breadth and depth of topics available in the part-time curriculum;
-Delivering academic support at times and in manners accessible to this cohort;
-Using creative in-class exercises and teaching methods;
-Offering bar-preparation courses as part of the regular curriculum; and
-Using team-teaching techniques with practicing attorneys and non-legal professionals.
