The panel will discuss topics relating to Islamic law and constitutions from a range of jurisdictions and time periods, examining the challenges, as well as opportunities, that arise. The papers explore questions of legislation and interpretation, the extent to which Islamic law can or should be a source of state legislation, who has the authority to interpret and determine the content of Islamic law, and the place of tradition within democracy. They also raise questions as to whether the very idea of Islamic constitutionalism is something we should even take seriously.
