Sessions Description

  • Public education has long been considered a cornerstone of American democracy. In Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court recognized it as “the very foundation” of good citizenship. Shortly after the Brown decision, however, massive resistance to school desegregation expanded privatization tactics, like private school vouchers and charter schools, which were designed to evade school desegregation. Panelists will address the current state of the privatization of public education, including expansion of private religious education. They will explore questions including: What does increased federal investment in privatization mean for students’ civil rights? How does privatization impact public school funding?
