As student services professionals, you are called upon to wear a number of different hats on a daily basis.  Students come to you for counseling, mentoring, and consultation on a myriad of issues.  Now, with our law schools full of “millennials”, the need for coaching has arrived on the scene as a real expectation of our students. An additional skill set is needed and, fortunately, is available to you.  What are the key skills of coaching?  How do you know when to stand in the role of coach rather than counselor, mentor, or consultant?  In this program, we will explore the differences between coaching, counseling, mentoring, and consulting, when to use each, and how each of these skill sets can enhance your overall effectiveness.  You will discover the tools needed for asking directed questions designed to elicit thoughtful responses and will interactively practice the use of these tools. You will also learn how to actively listen and be fully engaged in a coaching conversation with your students.
