This session will explore the history, context, and recent developments surrounding ABA Standard 405(c), which governs faculty status for clinical faculty. Participants will gain an understanding of the proposed revisions to Standard 405(c) and the advocacy efforts to concretize protections for clinical faculty and expand those protections to field placement directors, as well as legal writing and academic support faculty. The session will highlight the ongoing issues of status insecurity, the failure of many law schools to meaningfully implement tenure-like protections for clinicians, and the need for increased parity for field placement faculty. Given the evolving legal profession and the increasing diversity of law students, it is critical for law schools to ensure broad faculty participation from a variety of perspectives. With the ABA's proposed changes to Standard 405(c), law schools have an opportunity to address longstanding inequalities in academic freedom, job security, and faculty inclusion. This session will provide an overview of the current landscape, discuss advocacy strategies, and prepare attendees to engage with these pressing issues within their institutions. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the stakes and practical steps for ensuring faculty equity in legal education.
