Over the past several years, the AAPI community in the United States has been front and center due to acts of anti-Asian violence, while affirmative action debates have given new life to the model minority myth. In this context, AAPI clinicians gathered at the 2023 AALS Clinical Conference for a workshop entitled “The Importance of Being Earnestly Asian and American: Does it Matter?” The workshop provided a space for AAPI clinicians to share their experience as AAPI clinicians and allowed experienced and newer AAPI clinicians to forge intergenerational connections. The following year, AAPI clinicians gathered at the 2024 AALS Clinical Conference for a workshop entitled “Unfinished Stories About Asian American Identity.” That workshop continued the community storytelling begun in 2023 and explored how we can be resistant and resilient amidst backlash faced by AAPI communities and other communities of color. In both years, there was a consensus among attendees that these workshops have provided a powerful foundation for conversation, connection, and collaboration. For the 2025 AALS Clinical Conference, our workshop is titled “Building Resilience Through Allyship and Community.” This workshop seeks to continue building on the critical work of the past two years by creating a space for AAPI clinicians to come together: (1) to continue forging connections and building community among clinicians of the AAPI diaspora; (2) to explore how our identities and lived experiences inform our pedagogical approaches, and the strategies we employ, to address critical societal issues in the clinical space and beyond; and (3) to reflect on our unique responsibilities as AAPI clinicians in shaping a more equitable legal profession for our students, clients, and communities at large. Throughout, we will explore how allyship and community enhance our resilience to advance these endeavors.
