ABA Standard 303 requires law schools to provide training on bias, cross-cultural competency, and racism. The standard anticipates that the training can in part take place concurrently with the student’s enrollment in clinical or field placement courses. This session will try to come up with concrete ways to incorporate this sort of education across a variety of clinics and field placement programs and will think through questions that may arise as this standard is implemented. Does this training look different for litigation vs. transactional clinics vs. field placement programs? Should the training take place within the context of students’ legal work, in seminar, or in some other setting? How do we best train law students to be culturally competent and make them aware of the ways in which their own biases may affect their practice?
