This field trip will bring together attendees & community-based environmental justice advocates with a focus on amplifying insights from local organizations and visiting field sites in St. James Parish. St. James Parish is part of the 85-mile stretch of the Mississippi River known as “Cancer Alley” and is a focal point for environmental justice concerns because of the high concentration of petrochemical plants and the potential health impacts on its predominantly Black, low-income residents. The field trip will be combined with a pedagogy session focused on teaching environmental justice amidst the dismantling and recission of programs and requirements. The potential focus of these sessions is on community-engaged partnerships and pedagogy; on links between organizing, advocacy, and teaching; and on state & local land use planning. Transportation and a box lunch will be provided. Attendees will meet in the hotel lobby at 8:15 am before leaving via bus for the field trip.
