Advancement Team-Building and the Art of Communicating With Peers, Donors And Alumni
San Diego Salon A, North Tower/Lobby Level, San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina

Overworked Deans. Demanding prospects. Disconnected alumni. Frustrated faculty. Mistrusting peers. These are the daily challenges faced by advancement staff who must develop support for deans and faculty to improve legal education. But, the economy is down, expectations are up, new electronic tools emerge each day, and advancement staffs have little clarity about how to manage the pressure. Your ability to handle difficult, emotional conversations is a critical component to your success (and perhaps your sanity).

In this two-part plenary session, Ms. Heen, a former Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, and Mr. Richardson will discuss collaborative tactics for creating stronger advancement teams, as well as time-tested methods for communicating effectively with deans, prospects, alumni, faculty and peers. Ms. Heen and Mr. Richardson will offer some insights into understanding why these conversations are so challenging, and how to handle blame and disagreement more effectively. The goal of this unprecedented, two-part plenary will be to infuse the AALS Section on Institutional Advancement with transformative lessons that will increase participant and institutional capacity in immeasurable ways.

A 15 minute refreshment break will be taken during the half-way point of the session.
