At Penn State Dickinson Law’s Manglona Lab and Veterans and Servicemembers Legal Clinics, we use storytelling interview techniques to promote healing, empathy, education, and motivation. In the Manglona Lab, students interview women, contextualizing the underpinnings and the real-world implications of civil rights legislation. By capturing these women’s experiences, we give “voice” to their journeys. Similarly, in the Veterans Clinic, students hear first-hand stories of heroism and pain, capture the veterans’ needs, and give them a “voice” in their disability claims. These encounters are healing as they give purpose to the past – motivating the next generation to advocate for justice.
