Historic tensions between Tribes and States has resulted a myriad of conflicts between Tribal and State judicial systems.  These conflicts often arise as result of the lack of understanding, or rejection, of the role of tribal courts as lawful decision makers.  However, over the last few years Tribal and State Court cooperation has increased as each recognizes common objectives in promoting the welfare of their citizens.  This year’s conference will focus on emerging Tribal-State Court models for collaboration and creative problem solving and how these models benefit or undermine tribal self-determination.
