AALS Workshop: Progress? The Academy, Profession, Race and Gender: Empirical Findings, Research Issues, Potential Projects and Funding Opportunities

This workshop is in response to studies showing the continuation of the glass ceiling in the profession, the decline in the number of African American and Latino(a) students in law schools and the increase in the number of empirical studies of the profession. The workshop is planned for law professors who are interested in: (1) exposure to the latest research on law school and the profession, including research on senior legal academics and research, coming out of the "After the J.D. Study" housed at the American Bar Foundation, funded by a variety of sources, including the LSAC, and followed some 5,000 law graduates from the class of 2000 for ten years; (2) taking account of research on race and gender in the academy and the profession in their own scholarship or in the classroom; (3) information on the substantial increase in funding in the last ten years for empirical research including having grant proposals individually reviewed by knowledgeable professors and/or program officers; and (4) increasing their network of others interested in empirical research of all sorts in general and in race and gender in particular.
