Out with the Old, in with the New, or Same Old Same Old?: Exploring What Lessons, if any, the 2008 Elections Taught Us About Race, Gender, Class and Citizenship
As of January 2008, most observers already determined that the 2008 election season was, and would continue to be, laden with race/gender/class/citizenship-based issues. Across the board, the American public has had to address some difficult questions. The answers to these questions have proven unpredictable, diverse, complex, and, at times, uncertain. The purpose of this panel is to scrutinize these issues with a more lucid and sober perspective. The discussion generated from the panel will hopefully address, among other issues, the continuing role of race in the electoral process, whether any political candidates can truly address the interests of the marginalized, what tactics and strategies proved more effective in 2008 and whether the 2008 elections concretely advanced the racial/gender/class/citizenship discourse in America. Ultimately, the panel will hopefully highlight the lessons learned from the 2008 election season so as to help us determine how to best prepare for and tackle similar issues in the future.
