Consumer Protection Law and the Elderly: What’s New - What’s Needed
Schemes to defraud consumers have always existed. In recent years, however, they have become increasingly complex and difficult to prosecute. While anyone can be a victim of consumer fraud, perpetrators of consumer fraud often target the elderly. Panelists will provide an overview of the evolution of consumer protection law as it affects the elderly, provide insight into the pscycho-social issues that make certain elderly vulnerable to these schemes, detail problems in the insurance/annuity, gambling, and consumer counseling industries, discuss some of the latest schemes, and offer solutions for combating consumer fraud while respecting the autonomy of elderly consumers.
