This session explores whether emancipation was legal or constitution.  Speakers will approach this from the historical perspectives of abolitionist legal theory, property law, the law of war, and constitutional law.  Because we have seven panelists, we will have very short papers – sort of summary statements from each of the panelists -- followed by audience participation.
