Over the last decade, medical diagnoses of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (A.D.H.D.) have increased dramatically. The use of stimulants (the best known among this class of medicine are Adderall and Ritalin) to treat A.D.H.D. is on the rise on college and law school campuses. Many students take these medications as prescribed. However, a growing number of students are misusing these medications (either at dosages or settings different than prescribed or when not prescribed by a clinician at all) to stay awake and alert in order to complete school and/or work assignments and study for exams in the highly competitive arena of law school. Many may be unaware of or are disregarding the medications’ potential health risks. The panel will address this alarming trend, discuss the dangers of this abuse, and suggest ways that we, as administrators and faculty, can identify and assist our students who need help.
