What we think of as the modern state – a state that oversees the economy; invests in research, infrastructure, and education; and provides basic benefits like Social Security – is a product of New Deal responses to industrialization. Today's information age economy operates much differently, with contingent workforces and greater economic inequality. This panel will rethink the nature of the state in light of this economic transformation. What roles should the state now serve? How should the relationship between international, national, and local governance change? How might the state better acknowledge changing families and the importance of human capital investment?
