Clinicians agree that high-quality supervision and an effective, functional relationship between supervisor and student are critical components of a successful hybrid clinic or externship program.  Clinicians do not always agree about the best methods for fostering that relationship to ensure that the student receives the guidance, mentoring, and feedback needed to learn and grow from the fieldwork experience.  Using small groups, discussion and simulations, this interactive session will explore the various schools of thought within our community about different methods and techniques for nurturing the supervisory relationship.  We will look at such questions as:  How intentional are we about focusing on the development of this relationship?  What amount of time and energy do we invest in the supervisors?  In the students?  To the extent that we focus on the supervisors, what do we do and how do we evaluate its effectiveness?  To the extent that we focus on the students, what do we do and how do we evaluate effectiveness?  How do we teach students to “manage up?”
