Democracy wanes around the world. It is often assertions of sovereignty undergirding state actions that have challenged principles of free trade, international cooperation, and citizen's rights. How have the state building agenda and concerns with domestic political legitimacy redefined state sovereignty for East Asian countries? And what does this mean for democracy? This panel looks at the areas of international criminal justice, trade relations, and domestic governance, areas in which sovereignty has played a critical role in shaping the world order, and been shaped by citizens and other non-state actors.
