Democracy and racial equality are under assault. DEI programs in education are being dismantled in racially/politically gerrymandered states. Is there a connection between the attacks on democracy and racial equality? Yes, according to Brown v. Board of Education. In declaring that racially “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal,” Brown emphasized the centrality of equal education for robust democracy. Racial segregation is not just unequal, it is undemocratic. This panel brings election, education, and constitutional law scholars together to explore the relationship between race, unequal education and democracy subversion, with the goal of discerning lessons for the effective defense of democracy.
