After a remarkable year in higher education finance that saw a bold executive effort to cancel billions in student loans founder in the Supreme Court, battles over debt relief and the larger war of higher education access continue. The Education Department has implemented modifications to aid programs, enabling cancellation for tens of thousands of borrowers and arguably effecting change more durable than one-time cancellation. Program modifications have taken place as pandemic-era suspension of payment obligations ends, making more borrowers financially vulnerable. This panel will explore the challenges facing student borrowers and the policy possibilities of this moment.
