Technology is playing an increasingly important role in the legal profession. The ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct were recently amended to require attorneys to be aware of the benefits and risks of using technology in the practice of law. Companies are now beginning to assess the technology expertise of law firms before they hire them. In a recent ABA Journal article, federal judges warned lawyers that the “absence of technical knowledge is a distinct competitive disadvantage.” Law schools too are beginning to focus on the role of law practice technology in the curriculum, and a handful of schools now host centers and institutes that prepare students to use technology in law practice. In this program, a panel of academic and law firm librarians will discuss the types of technology used in law practice today and the role law librarians can play in training students to use those technologies.
