A single professor adopting an “open educational resources” (OER) casebook (or an “open textbook”) for one course can save students more than ten thousand dollars. Multiplied by faculty across the country, the potential savings—in 1L criminal law alone—are measured in the millions of dollars annually. This panel will feature presentations by faculty who have taught criminal justice courses with OER materials. It will also discuss other innovative teaching methods, such as criminal law casebooks taking a more critical approach than most traditional books. Come discuss the benefits and challenges of this new movement in law teaching.
