The panel will explore the various state and local regulations stemming from COVID-19 and how those regulations interact with religious free exercise, one of the areas with the greatest legal controversy, including cases that have gone up to the United States Supreme Court in emergency postures. The response to COVID-19 and the treatment of free exercise by governments has been varied, including special exceptions or specific regulations. The response of religious Americans has also varied, from compliance to defiance. This panel will investigate these varied laws and responses from various perspectives, including doctrinal and policy angles.
