From the Antiques Road Show to the FBI's Art Crime's Unit, the ability to authenticate–and thus valuate a work of art–has deep ramifications. But who is making these determinations and what are the legal challenges and implications? This panel will examine these questions in a variety of settings, including posthumous castings of sculpture; "how much" of a work must be by the signed author for it to be their "authentic" work; the liability of art authenticators; how forgers utilize authentication tools; and the prosecution of art fraud and trafficking crimes.
