In 1999, the Supreme Court held in Olmstead v. L.C. that the unjustified segregation of persons with disabilities violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. Olmstead, and the enforcement of its integration mandate, has enabled thousands of individuals to live in their homes and communities instead of in an institution, providing them with greater independence, autonomy, and opportunities to participate in their community. The 25th anniversary of this landmark decision provides an opportunity to reflect on Olmstead’s impact and explore the creative new ways it has been used recently, particularly by the U.S. Department of Justice.
