The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has experienced a rise in litigation addressing armed conflicts, including in Myanmar, Ukraine, and Gaza. While the basis is the ICJ’s jurisdiction over Genocide Convention violations, the actions have also served as a vehicle to address aggression and other atrocity crimes. The actions not only raise important legal questions but also have revived a focus on the ICJ’s ability to impact international affairs. The panel will address the impact of these ICJ cases, including on standing requirements, the use of provisional measures, interpretation of genocide, and role of international law in addressing humanitarian crises.
