This panel will explore the legal, ethical, and social issues that arise when activists risk incarceration to liberate animals. In recent years, activists have rescued pigs from factory farms, taken chickens from trucks bound for slaughterhouses, and conducted hidden-camera investigations of businesses that use animals, to name just a few of the direct action tactics of the animal rights movement. In conversation with defense lawyers and activists, this panel will explore how such actions put activists and social movements in direct engagement with the criminal legal system in ways that raise important legal, strategic, and ethical questions.
