Access
to the profession operates within the legacy of largely unexamined histories of
purposeful exclusion that may challenge our comfort with current practices. Professor Mary Szeto will present ordeals of a Chinese-American graduate
of Columbia Law in the context of the Chinese Exclusion Acts. Professors Carla Pratt and Gregory Parks will address the exclusion of
Black lawyers. Professor Samuel Levine will address the exclusion of immigrant, Jewish, and other
minority communities, particularly early in the twentieth century. Professor Joan Howarth will discuss character and fitness exclusions targeting LGBTQ candidates
and people with disabilities, from her book, Shaping
the Bar (Stanford Univ. Press 2022).
Business meeting at program conclusion.
