The Clinical Program at Southwestern Law School has a unique collaboration with the Los Angeles Dependency Court, Los Angeles Delinquency Court, and the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).  As an extension of this collaboration, the clinical program established a new externship with the Children’s Law Center of Los Angeles, the lawyers who represent minors at the Los Angeles Dependency Court.  This session will explore how the clinics established these programs to serve the most vulnerable members of our community – abused, neglected and abandoned children, children with special needs, and crime victims.  We will also discuss how the inter-connectedness of the programs provide a more holistic representation to our clients and the value that our law students gain from this approach.  We will share how our students are learning practical legal skills.  We will highlight the best practices from each program, including specific teaching exercises.  Participants will leave with sample materials so that they are ready to implement exercises and materials into their own programs, including teaching exercises and writing materials; assessment forms/grading rubrics; class evaluation forms and student-partner evaluation forms.
