Calls to defund police and current proposed reforms seek to shift resources away from police; many simultaneously seek to increase resources for care systems. Yet, care systems—including medical clinics, psychiatric hospitals, emergency rooms, and homeless outreach—are heavily policed and reproduce punitive and carceral logics. This panel explores this underexplored intersection of policing and care work. Panelists draw from diverse legal frameworks--e.g., disability law, health privacy law, and workplace safety law— to present a robust picture of not only the harmful practices and effects of policing in care settings, but also potential productive interventions.
