Goals: Building legal structures within tribal justice systems requires elevating cultural and community values and relevance against steep historical and contemporary external pressures to Westernize, if not outright disestablish.
This poster seeks to provide a primer on key considerations for approaching legal work with Tribes, including both primary legal considerations along with cultural ones.
Learning Objectives:
1. Provide foundational take-aways for modern tribal governments and judiciaries, including appreciating the diversity amongst them.
2. Provide foundational federal laws impacting modern tribal justice systems.
3. Fuel clinicians with primary considerations for approaching work with tribes, including reflection on how culture can be incorporated, and what other sources of law should be prioritized.
