In the wake of the pandemic, consumer debt
is one of the biggest issues affecting our country, and low-income consumers
will face the brunt of it. There is no doubt that they will face harsh debt
collection practices, predatory lending and unfair credit reporting. The
National Consumer Law Center and other advocates are calling for legislation
and policy barring pandemic-era rental debt from being used as a barrier to
housing. But rental debt is just one factor. Across the board, debt collection
abuses are on the rise, and consumers are feeling the effects. How can law and
policy intervene?
