In 1972, thirty lawyers, including Richard Nixon, were involved in Watergate. One of Watergate’s enduring legacies is its impact on attorney ethics. In the years immediately following Watergate, the AALS PR Section was chartered, the ABA required law schools to provide attorney ethics instruction, and the Kutak Commission began its work which resulted in the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Fifty years later, we witnessed an insurrection that once again implicates issues of attorney ethics. This panel will consider fifty years of legal ethics in the U.S., including progress we have made and work that remains to be done. The Section on Professional Responsibility will be holding a joint award ceremony with Leadership, Pro Bono & Public Service Opportunities, and Women in Legal Education on Saturday, January 8th at 2:00 - 3:00 pm Eastern.
