Law schools have long been homogenous. As Lani Guinier said about women’s legal education, law school is about “becoming gentlemen,” one could say that it is about “becoming white gentlemen.” Traditional hierarchies are entrenched throughout all of legal education. Although law schools have come to understand the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, it often feels as DEI is merely performative. This panel explores the ways in which well-intentioned DEI programs, policies, and practices have failed to meaningfully change the culture of law school and considers approaches by which a law school may make a difference by making difference meaningful.
