Social Security has transformed America. It reduced elderly poverty, ushered in the idea of retirement as a stage of life available to all, and altered the relationship of Americans to their government and to each other. Social Security is projecting a shortfall, which must be addressed legislatively. Some scholars advocate addressing it through revenue increases only while increasing benefits. Some support a combination of benefit increases and benefit reductions, but others propose fundamentally changing the program. Four leading thinkers on Social Security will discuss options for the future in the context of the program’s present and past.
