Family Law clinics, like much of the practice of private family law, have typically avoided handling any aspect of family policing cases. Yet the low-income primarily Black and indigenous families which Family Law Clinics typically serve, are most impacted by the family policing system, and Clinic clients often interface with family policing authorities. Yet effective advocacy and representation from the first knock at the door and beyond can help preserve families’ integrity and stability against the harms of family policing. Family Law Clinics offer an important intersection point for expansion into Family Defense advocacy. This lightning round session will feature two Clinics, one at Harvard Law, and one at Temple Law, which are incorporating family defense advocacy into existing family law clinic structures. The presenters will share their reasons for expanding their Clinic’s practice, the logistics entailed in such an expansion, as well as effective clinical pedagogical tools they have used with students.
