This workshop will encourage reflection on ongoing conversations in law school clinical programs over providing offerings in newer or emerging legal areas, in this case, Entrepreneurship and Intellectual Property. The session will use an interactive format to simulate the law school planning process for the creation of a hypothetical new live-client law school clinic in these areas. Drawing on the collective experience of the participants, the session will explore the choice of clinical goals, social justice mission of the program, teaching methods, funding and hiring, practice activities, and practice settings associated with the creation of a new clinic in these growing fields with high student interest. Participants will each be given a law school community role to play (older and younger clinicians, faculty program heads, admissions and alumni office reps, student reps, etc.). In breakout sessions, participants will brainstorm and debate the issues involved in such an undertaking from the viewpoint of their assigned role. Participants will then reconvene and debate the plan for the new clinic in a group faculty meeting. The presenters will play the role of the Dean’s office decision-makers and guide the discussion.
