Property and real estate scholarship on suburbs has often tended to treat them as undifferentiated areas that lack diversity, sprawl, vote monolithically, and resist change. However, that view has begun to shift, as innovative scholars consider the complex demography of suburbs and the ways in which these small cities are evolving over time. The purpose of this program is to engage this conversation by exploring our changing suburbs and how they should be understood. It will investigate whether and to what extent suburbs are actually sites of dramatic social, economic, demographic and environmental change. The panelists will address topics such as the changing role of common interest communities, annexation and regionalization, social trust, residential mortgage markets and patterns and incentives for sustainable energy use in the suburbs.
