Increased barriers to racial justice, threats to democracy, and advancements in AI have reshaped the legal landscape, making it more critical than ever for lawyers to develop relational intelligence – the ability to build, manage, and sustain meaningful relationships with a broad range of clients, communities, and adversaries. This interactive session will explore tools clinicians can use to help their students understand the skills necessary to develop this relational intelligence – empathy, adaptability, trust-building, and nuanced communication. Participants will engage in two experiential exercises: 1. Picasso’s Puzzle – A communication simulation that highlights the complexities of translating legal knowledge into client understanding. Through a visual illustration of the barriers to effective communication, participants experience the importance of reflective listening, communication, and adapting to different perspectives. 2. World Beyond Your Worldview – A guided reflection exercise that pushes participants to engage in unfamiliar experiences, fostering awareness and empathy for how clients feel when navigating the legal system. This exercise underscores the lawyer’s role in bridging gaps in understanding, building trust, and ensuring clients feel seen, heard, and empowered. As clinical educators, we have a responsibility to prepare students not just to know the law, but to work with people. This session offers practical tools to help law students develop the relational intelligence necessary to work with an undeniably wide-ranging constituency in a rapidly changing and challenging world.
