As higher education remains a focus of political and cultural controversy, academic freedom faces multi-front attacks. Meanwhile, the principle that faculty, administrators, and governing boards share joint responsibility for running institutions risks becoming more theoretical than real. Politicians seize upon rising discontent with higher education, attacking professors and administrators for political gain. Financial pressures and reliance on "contingent" faculty labor erode traditional faculty authority over curriculum, academic personnel decisions, and other core academic functions. How can law faculty and others protect the integrity of their institutions? Perennial problems now arise in new contexts. Today's circumstances may justify novel responses.
