This workshop will engage participants in exercises designed to encourage professors to adopt learning outcomes that teach students how to reflect.

Experiential learning at law schools is lawyering skills in action, and whether this takes place in a clinic, externship, or skills class, the goal is to help students move their legal skill set forward. Students cannot grow or move forward without reflection. But how many of us explain to students why we reflect? And do we teach them how to reflect?

This workshop will include a presentation and small group work. We will provide information and statistics related to adult learning theory and recent studies, which demonstrate the role and importance of teaching students the “why” and “how” of reflection before asking students to complete reflection assignments.

Participants will work through 1) a self-development rubric focused on teaching students how to reflect; and 2) an analogous reflective exercise for professors that focuses on their own self-development and reflective practice. By working through their own rubric, participants will be better prepared to teach students how to complete the self-development rubric focused on reflection.
