Many law school clinics work with nonprofits that are organized to
further racial and economic justice and focus their services on communities of
color and immigrant communities. These organizations are often classified by
the IRS as economic development or social welfare organizations, which
categorization potentially limits the activities the nonprofits are able to
conduct. This community gathering is a space for clinicians to share and
discuss their “best” practices for advising nonprofits, including what
limitations, if any, can or should be imposed in the organizational documents
and ongoing operations with respect to race and other identities.
