Law schools have a role to play in developing expertise in strengthening legal systems in developing countries which can provide greater justice and security for their citizens.  Law and justice are key to social and economic development – poverty may consist in the absence of justice as much as the absence of money.  Many lawyers would like to bring their skills to the international development process, and there is an opportunity for law schools to define a more standard educational program and career progression for the international rule of law reform field.  What knowledge do we lawyers need, in order to be able to truly and usefully to support policy makers and change leaders who are seeking to bring greater justice to their country or village?  How might law faculties help us to learn the skills and methodologies – legal expertise as well as expertise and methodologies of analysis we can borrow from colleagues studying public administration, development economics, business, international affairs – that might equip us to do this work?  What are some career paths and types of work experience we can gain during and after law school to help us move into the field of international rule of law development?
