In 2021, following George Gascón’s election as LA County District Attorney, the Juvenile Innocence & Fair Sentencing Clinic at Loyola Law School began a collaboration with prosecutors: an ambitious project to examine and remedy every excessive sentence in LA County in the past 30 years. Can law students in a post-conviction criminal defense clinic work side by side with deputy DAs? Can the largest prosecutorial agency in the country change its long-established practices?
