Over the last few years, legal education has experienced a significant increase persons appointed to official roles as diversity officers at their respective institutions. Appointments of DEI officers have included those from the faculty and from outside the faculty ranks. Appointments have included those with formal backgrounds and experience in DEI, and those without such formal or experiential backgrounds. This panel is an opportunity to gather those who have worked to build DEI offices in law schools to consider their role, function, challenges, and future in the law school and university context. This panel will draw on faculty and deans who have appointed and worked with DEI officers to consider the prospects and constraints on DEI offices. We hope that this might provide an opportunity for the development of conversations among experienced and new DEI officers for more engagement in their respective institutions.
