This concurrent session offers practical ideas related to effective techniques for teaching skills in the current environment. The techniques for teaching financial planning skills demonstrated and discussed during this session can be easily adapted for use in a variety of settings, including upper level business courses and clinical courses. The presenters will model an interactive style of teaching that we propose can be used with students. In this session we will: confront the typical law student’s fear of finances; discuss the reasons for teaching financial skills in a transactional clinic and the value students and attorneys can add to resolving clients’ problems by using such skills; demonstrate the use of several financial planning spreadsheets; and encourage participants to explore and develop other financial tools to facilitate student engagement and enhance student learning. Each participant will receive a CD containing Excel spreadsheets that can be used in class and with clients to demonstrate the use of profit and loss, cash flow, and other financial statements.
